Will my lamp go dark, oh Lord,
for am I not but vessel and wick?
And is not the light that glows
and the oil that within me flows
by your hand alone secured?
Were I to lose the flame that lights my path,
and begin to journey into darkness thick
where I may stumble out of the way
and dark and dreadful spirits seek me for their prey,
would You not hasten to rescue me from the hunter’s wrath?
Remember Lord, You decreed affliction as our plight,
and left us no better equipped than as vessel and wick.
Unless you abide in us, our vessels will soon empty,
Unless You provide for us we at length become unsteady.
But if You are with us our eyes are a lamp full of light.
Do not forget us Oh Lord, though we be lowly in your sight…
for we wander with fragile flame in dark and foreboding night.
